What does Net Neutrality mean?

Net Neutrality literally means keeping the net neutral. As of a few years ago, the Internet was a sort of rampant place of randomness. Websites were rising and falling all the time, content networks springing up that needed ad revenue and what not.

How do Net Neutrality laws work?

The best way to explain how ISP’s are tipping the scale is to use Netflix as the primary example. Everyone loves Netflix, they make tons of money and use it to produce great shows. They never show ads and their prices remain relatively low despite producing amazing stuff all of the time.

Comcast, NBC, and other companies are starting to move online because more people want Netflix for only ten bucks instead of Basic cable which ranges up to 100 dollars in some lower end areas.

So a few years ago, Net Neutrality went from Type I entity to Type II, and suddenly people who were on Comcast Internet (Comcast owns Netflix Competitor, Hulu) watching Netflix were experiencing longer slow-down speeds and disconnects from the shows they were watching.

So what happened? Netflix has to pay between 25 and 50 million dollars every year so that Comcast won’t throttle their internet.

It’s bad for consumers because it means that Internet Service Providers have more weight over your monthly payments and so on and so forth.

What can you do to Protect Net Neutrality?

There are three things that you can do to protect Net Neutrality, which is becoming more vital every day.

“I believe that Net Neutrality is important and I want less power given to big corporations that seek to find additional profit through abusing the rights of internet based companies. I drastically oppose this notion and hope to restore all the rights necessary to maintaining a free and open internet.”

Donate to EFF – The Electonic Frontier Foundation is a non-profit company that regularly opposes and lobbies to Congress to keep the Internet open and free. Any help they can get will make it easier to fight for our rights in the courtroom.

Change ISPs – Unfortunately for most, there aren’t a lot of options when it comes to ISPs, you often have to deal with the likes of Comcast and ATT, which often oversell and underutilize their internet. However, there are websites that you can use such as BroadbandNow. That help you find alternative ISP’s in your area. While the results may seem underwhelming, keep in mind that often Xfinity and ATT advertise that you are getting these speeds when you often get much less.
