The Arrival of Apple
The Apple has released their landing page for their new in-home smart speaker the HomePod. Integrated with Siri, a beautiful mesh design, and spatial recognition, this is Apple’s best foot forward into the smart speaker market.
But will this smart speaker be the landmark progression for the current market or will they be too far behind on the trend?
What the HomePod Boasts
The homepod market already has a close battle between Google Home and Amazon Echo, so what does the HomePod offer in competition?
Superior Sound – Apple has used the amazing audio fidelity of the Sonos speakers to deliver a more adaptable and better sound.
Smart Sound – Not only will it create a better fidelity of sound, but it also claims that it will use radar to determine it’s proximity to the walls and thus adapt the speaker as such.
iPhone integration – Integration with the iPhone means you can use Siri to send messages through your homepod and other Siri specific abilities.
Is that enough?
The Smart Speaker market is a tough racket right now. The only strength that the HomePod has is its speaker. But there are a few problems with them in competition with the Echo and the Home.
Oblique Pricing – The HomePod is nearly twice as much as the Echo and over thrice as much as the Google Home. Additionally, with the frequency of sales from the Echo and the Home, it’s not hard to imagine these numbers growing in the distance.
Better Sound, but not Hi-Fi – From what they have released so far, the speakers are smarter, but not necessarily better. The mesh filter will make a cleaner sound, but since iTunes doesn’t transmit hi-fidelity audio from the start, it’s difficult to say if the speaker will truly be able to shine, let alone have a $200 price tag difference.
Fewer Options at Launch than Competitors – The Echo and the Home have been around for a while now. The Echo will have had market dominance for over two years before the HomePod hits the scene. Additionally, there are more things you can do with the Echo than the Homepod at launch.
On all sides there is:
- Smart Home integration
- Streaming Music Apps (iTunes is excluded from Home and Echo, but they have their music apps)
- Third Party integration

Currently, I have an Echo, and I’m happy about it. But I am interested to see what the HomePod has to offer. I think it could be a great device to have in many Apple owner’s homes, but that price tag seems exceedingly high considering the similar capabilities of both products.
